Chemistry 100/100L Spring 2010 Syllabus: Policies

mustClass information . I expect you to be active learners, who make an effort to learn during lecture and lab, and to enjoy this sometimes rather tedious subject. If you miss a lecture, you remain responsible for all material, notes, assignments, announcements, and schedule changes presented that day.

Be courteous. If you do not want to listen and take notes during class, please be courteous to those who do. You may nosh during lecture, if you are polite and do not disturb others. Disruptive students will be removed from the class session and the next one, according to the District Code of Student Conduct. Please use your classroom and lab time wisely, and treat others in the class with the same respect and kindness that you should expect from them.

Adding Classes. Students wishing to add CHEM 100 will be accepted in the following order only if enrolled in CHEM 100L: (1) Official Wait List, (2) Previous Arrangements, (3) Random Crasher List. The same priority order applies to tudents enrolled in CHEM 100 who wish to add CHEM 100L.

Drops by Student. You will receive a grade if you remain on the course roster after 2/5/2010, even if you have decided to drop the course. If you do decide to drop the course, you must contact the Admissions Office and actually drop it. Until 4/9/2010, a grade of W may be assigned to students who withdraw after 2/5/2010. After 4/9/2010, a grade of A, B, C, D, or F must be assigned. It is your responsiblity to drop the course if you decide to stop attending.

Drops by Professor
. District policy requires me to drop any registered student who does not attend or is late, and does not have a prearranged excused absence, for the first day of class. I may also drop any student with four or more unexcused absences from lecture or two unexcused absences from lab. Don't count on me to drop you, however, if you have stopped attending the class.

Safety Note: If you drop CHEM 100 must also drop CHEM 100L and check out of lab immediately. You will be responsible for any missing equipment. Failure to check out by the end of the semester will result in a lab fine being added to your college account (see Lab Check-In sheet for details).

Excused Absences and Late/Make-Up Work . Absences are "excused" only by prior notification of your instructor, according to the guidelines below. No make-up opportunities exist for in-class exercises, quizzes, and exams that you miss due to any absence, tardiness, or early exit (excused or unexcused). When you miss a lecture or lab due to an excused absence, you may submit homework, lab activities, and portions of lab reports that do not depend on lab data on time for full credit (in person, by courier, or by scan/email), or upon your return with a 25% deduction for each class period late. An additional 15% will be deducted after the answers are discussed in class and/or the key is posted online. Without prior notification according to the following guidelines, your absence will be unexcused and no late work will be accepted.

  • Professional / personal reasons, including non-emergency illness: You must notify me before the start time of the class you will miss.
  • Emergency: Contact me (or arrange for a friend or family member to contact me) as soon as possible, but no later than one day after the class you miss.
  • Acceptable Notification, in order of preference:
    1. Best method: E-mail to dlingner @sdccd.edu
    2. Written note given directly to me.
    3. Written note in my faculty mailbox
      (Room A-104).
    4. Contact by phone is not recommended;
      I do not use my SDCCD voicemail box.

Absences, tardiness, and early exits will be noted and recorded, and may affect your grade in borderline situations. Miramar College policy allows me to treat late arrivals and early departures as absences.

Office Hours. I don't have an office at Miramar. Periodically, I will hold office hours at a nearby restaurant or other location. These meetings are not required, and are on my own time, and are designed to provide you with an opportunity to ask questions or just to study. Other convenient opportunities to ask questions include lab periods in which you finish early, or anytime by email, facebook, and instant messenger.
