Grading Policies: Fairness is paramount in
academics and is my first priority in grading. Grades are determined based on
the percentage of points earned in
each grading category. When a test or assignment requires a calculated answer or detailed reasoning, your answer should include a
clear, step-by-step solution or clear explanation; this is also advantageous in terms of partial credit.
Academic
Honesty: Students at PLNU are expected to uphold the
highest standards of honesty and integrity in their academic
work. Plagiarism on a quiz or exam includes use of prewritten
notes, allowing another student to copy your answers (i.e.,
not preventing it), or looking at another student's answers.
On homework and in-class activities, you may consult with others,
but you must be able to reproduce each answer on your own,
if asked to do so. Direct copying (e.g., copying without thinking)
is not fair. Plagiarism will result
in a maximum of zero for that assignment or examination (for
both students) and a referral to the academic dean and your
advisor.
Absences & Make-Ups:
Please email me before class begins
if you will be absent for all or part of a class period. If
you miss all or part of a class, you remain responsible
for everything covered (including announcements and activities)
on that day. Emergency situations and illnesses will be considered
on a case-by-case basis. If you are ill and expect to be absent,
please email me and visit the Wellness Center as soon as possible. "Excused" absences
are those which are prearranged and necessary due to legitimate
illness (Wellness Center verified), specific personal reasons (e.g., your sister's wedding), or PLNU business (with email approval from the Provost).
• No make-up opportunities exist for a missed exam, quiz, in-class
activity, or homework due to an absence that is not excused. No late assignment is accepted after its answer key is posted.
• Exams (including the final) must be taken at the assigned time. If you anticipate a
conflict, please let me know during the first week
of our quad.
• No make-up opportunities exist for a missed quiz.
• If you miss an in-class activity and your absence is excused,
you may submit it before 1:30 pm of the next class day (your new due date)
minus 10% (deduction waived for verified illnesses and Provost-excused absences).
• For excused absences on days when homework is due, you may send
it to me on time (i.e., before 1:30 pm on the due date) for full credit.
• If you submit an in-class activity or homework late following
an excused absence, the assignment loses 25% of its value per class day,
starting at the original due date. |
Grade Basis
A >= 90.0 %
B 80.0-89.9 %
C 65.0-79.9 %
D 50.0-64.9 %
F < 50.0 %
Plus & minus grades (e.g., B+ or A–)
apply to the top or bottom third of each category,
with allowances or deductions for attendance, responsibility,
professionalism, interest, and active participation in class. |

Grade Categories
Exam 1: *25%
Exam 2: *25%
Activities: 25%
Final Exam: *25%
*The exam percentages will be adjusted by changing your high
exam to 35% and your low exam to 15%. The lowest two activities will be dropped from the average. A good grade on the final
exam can be very convincing in borderline cases. |
