Che 467 - Advanced Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory
Syllabus, page 2

Policies

  • Please notify me in writing, preferably via email, if you are going to miss any of the labs. Because of the small enrollment, we have some flexibility in scheduling, but I would prefer you to perform each lab during the designated week.
  • All labs must be performed with a partner.
  • Lab notebooks are your record of what you did in the lab, and will suffice as your report for some experiments. While working with a partner, you might like to divide up some work. Lab partners should be aware of each other's activities at all times, and may not work alone on these experiments. If you need to record something that your partner did, record it as your partner is recording it in his/her notebook. If you must copy it later, make a comment in your lab notebook that you are copying the data from your partner, stating the reason the data was not written as it was obtained (e.g., busy watching the reaction proceed, etc.).
  • Unless otherwise arranged, labs will be performed in the far left hood of the research lab.

Grading

  • Grades will be awarded based on the following point system:
    A (90-100), B (80-89), C (65-79), D (50-64), F (0-49).
  • Grade points will be apportioned with 15 points for each of the five required experiments and 15 points for of two each formal lab reports for a total of 100 points in the course. (Yes, I know it adds up to 105 points; consider it compensation for my tough grading criteria.) The optional lab will count for 15 points and will be used to replace your lowest lab or report score.
  • Subjective criteria, if applicable for borderline situations, will include your communication skills (including writing), ability to stick to the schedule, and your techniques, helpfulness, and resourcefulness in the lab.
