Safety in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

Safety in the lab is best achieved through preparation and precaution. Do not enter the lab without knowing what you will be doing and why you are doing it.

Visualize the experimental sequence, and write a thorough outline of the procedure into your lab notebook. Check the toxicities of each chemical, especially those with which you are unfamiliar. The following is a brief list of important safety rules. Additional precautions will accompany each lab. Pay special attention to the use of chemicals and equipment that are unfamiliar to you.

  • Wear safety goggles at all times in the laboratory. Splash-proof goggles, rather than safety glasses, are recommended.
  • Do not work alone.
  • Use common sense. Do not rush or take shortcuts.
  • I would like to know when you are working on a Che 467 lab. Please inform me of your planned schedule before you begin your experiment. At least a day's notice would be appreciated.
  • If I am not present on campus while you are working, make sure you have arranged for another chemistry instructor to be "on call" during your work period, and that the instructor knows when you'll be working and what you'll be doing.
  • Know the location of safety equipment (and how to use it), including eye washes, safety showers, fire extinguishers, fire exits, first aid kits, and fire blankets.
  • Report spills or accidents to your instructor immediately.
  • Dispose of chemicals in appropriate waste containers.
  • Keep your lab space, including public areas such as balances, clean and free of clutter.

Read Szafran, et al., pages 5-17, before you begin working on a lab this semester.
