Catalog Description: Designated to accompany Chemistry 466 and/or 468. Emphasis on the synthesis and characterization of metallic and nonmetallic compounds. One 4-hour laboratory each week. Offered on a Quad basis. Corequisite: Chemistry 466 or 468.
Textbook: None are required. Use your instructor's copy for reference. Do not remove originals from chemistry office. The following textbooks will be used this semester:
- "Chm 241 Laboratory Manual, Fall 2006," by David R. McMillan (2006). Experiments compiled and revised by members of the Chemistry Department at Purdue University.
- "Experimental Methods in Inorganic Chemistry," by John Tanaka and Steven L. Suib (1999). Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. ISBN 0-13-841909-4.
- "Microscale Inorganic Chemistry: A Comprehensive Laboratory Experience," by Zvi Szafran, Ronald M. Pike, and Mono M. Singh (1991). John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York. ISBN 0-471-61996-5.
- Perhaps a few others - TBD.
Experiments will be performed during the week as designated on the schedule.
- Read or review these general safety precautions prior to performing each experiment. You must also read the safety precautions in the lab manual for each experiment and include important safety notes in your lab notebook.
- Use a lab notebook for each experiment. You must submit copies of your lab notebook pages to your instructor at the end of each day that you are in the lab. See the lab notebook guidelines for detailed requirement on keeping a notebook.
- Submit a lab report for each experiments, as specified on the lab reports page.
